Remembering Dr. James C. Coleman
It is with great sorrow that Tougaloo College announces the passing of alumnus and longtime faculty member Dr. James C. Coleman. We extend our sincerest condolences to his family, students, student-athletes, coaches, alumni, friends, and colleagues. The higher education community has lost a stalwart champion, a piece of Mississippi history. He served the institution for nearly six decades in various administrative positions, including the dean and professor in the School of Education, Supervision and Instruction, coach, sports information director, and athletic director, where he served for over three decades. Dr. Coleman lived a purposeful and meaningful life and left a profound legacy through his accomplishments and the many lives he touched. Respected and admired by students, faculty, staff, alumni, and others, his strong belief in the power of education to transform lives is what he lived daily. Throughout athletic circles, he was a principal figure in the growth and development of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference and the athletic program at Tougaloo College. Dr. James Coleman is a Tougaloo legend.
A memorial service to celebrate his life is at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 22, 2023, in the historic Woodworth Chapel. The family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider donating to the Dr. James C. Coleman Athletic Fund. Click on the link to donate: igfn.us/f/46m2/n.
